Comics! In Edinburg, No Less!

This is a story I’ve been meaning to post for a while — like right after my trip home in September. Oh well, here it is.

Loving comics and growing up in the RGV are seemingly incompatible things. For years, we never did have a dedicated comic book store. Then when one finally did open up, it got overtaken by tournaments for crappy games like Magic the Gathering and emo-kid skateboard clubs — thanks a bundle, Myth Adventures. The only Myth about that place is that they sell comics.

Now there’s a ray of hope in Edinburg. Turns out the Mission Tile building has been repurposed into Cyber Comics. Mission Tile has moved out and taken over the adjoining warehouse while one of the sons of the owner has decided to fill the main room with a comics shop. Having never needed to go to Mission Tile for anything, I didn’t realize how large that space was — in a word, GINORMOUS.

They’ve got comics (der), figures, manga, air hockey, a pool table, Smash Bros tournaments and all sorts of other stuff you could use to waste away a weekend or two. As it is, I’m supposed to be helping them out by telling them what some of the NYC and larger LI comics shops are carrying but I’m doing a rather lousy job of it.

However, they did offer to ship me anything I wanted or needed in the future. That’s something I can definitely get behind.

You can view their website here and if you do make a go of it, ask for Ian and tell him you know LorY and I (mostly LorY, they went to school together). Enjoy.

A word of warning about the website. It’s standard MySpace stuff with loud music and insanely loud colors. Best to look at home and with the sound turned down.
